CONTINUITY OVER COVERAGE
Interim Marketing Leadership When the Business Cannot Afford to Drift
When a marketing leader steps away, projects are not the only thing at risk. Decisions slow down. Priorities compete. Teams absorb responsibilities they were never meant to carry. Revenue goals and critical relationships lose experienced ownership.
I step in to lead the marketing function, support the team, and keep the business moving until the permanent leader returns or the next leadership structure is in place.
Interim leadership for planned leave, extended absence, unexpected departure, leadership handoff, or temporary vacancy.
The Work May Be Covered. The Leadership Is Not.
Redistributing projects may keep a few deadlines from slipping. It does not replace leadership capacity.
Without clear ownership:
✓ Decisions slow down.
✓ Priorities begin to compete.
✓ Teams absorb responsibilities they were not staffed or authorized to carry.
✓ Agencies and cross-functional partners lose direction.
✓ Senior executives get pulled into marketing decisions they should not have to manage.
And when everyone is responsible for keeping marketing moving, no one is truly accountable for it.
Interim marketing leadership restores experienced ownership before a temporary gap becomes a business-wide problem.
Experienced Leadership for the Work That Cannot Drift
I work with the executive team and existing marketing organization to determine what must continue, what can pause, and where leadership attention will have the greatest business impact.
Depending on the engagement, I step in to:
Protect Strategic Priorities
Keep critical initiatives, launches, campaigns, and commitments aligned with business goals.
Support Revenue and Performance
Connect marketing activity to growth goals, sales priorities, customer needs, and meaningful measures.
Lead the Marketing Team
Set priorities, support decisions, reinforce accountability, and provide day-to-day leadership.
Manage Critical Relationships
Maintain alignment across executives, sales, agencies, vendors, clients, and cross-functional partners.
Maintain Decision Momentum
Make or escalate decisions within an agreed scope so work does not stall.
Prepare the Handoff or Return
Document decisions, surface changed priorities, and create a structured transition for the returning or permanent leader.
Hands-On Leadership, Not Another Layer to Manage
I step into the existing organization to lead the people, priorities, decisions, and partners responsible for keeping marketing moving.
The goal is not to introduce a new agenda. It is to quickly understand what matters, provide experienced ownership, and help the team perform through the transition.
The Work That May Need Leadership
Depending on the organization and transition, that may include leadership across:
✓ Annual and quarterly marketing plans
✓ Product, brand, or market launches
✓ Integrated campaigns and content programs
✓ Customer acquisition and retention priorities
✓ Sales enablement and marketing-sales alignment
✓ Agency, vendor, and budget management
✓ Performance measurement & executive reporting
✓ Brand, customer, and audience strategy
My role is to lead the priorities, decisions, people, and partners responsible for delivering the work.
When Interim Marketing Leadership Makes Sense
This support is designed for organizations that have capable people and important work underway, but temporarily lack the senior marketing leadership capacity to hold it all together.
You may have strong employees, reliable agencies, and talented specialists already in place. What is missing is not another pair of hands. It is someone who can connect the work, lead the people, and take appropriate ownership for the decisions in between.
It may be the right fit when:
✓ A marketing leader is preparing for parental, medical, or caregiving leave.
✓ An extended absence has created a leadership or decision-making gap.
✓ A key leader has departed unexpectedly.
✓ Responsibilities are shifting during a leadership handoff or restructure.
✓ The organization needs stability while determining its permanent leadership needs.
✓ The team is already at capacity and cannot responsibly absorb senior-level ownership.
✓ Executives need someone who can lead the function without requiring significant day-to-day management.
The Right Kind of Support for a Temporary Leadership Gap
Different resources solve different problems.
A freelancer can execute defined work. An agency can provide specialized capabilities or additional production capacity. A fractional CMO usually supports an ongoing part-time leadership need.
Interim marketing leadership is different.
I enter for a defined period to provide the leadership capacity that is temporarily unavailable. I work within the organization, alongside the existing team and partners, to protect priorities, guide decisions, maintain accountability, and prepare for a successful handoff or return.
This is also different from simply dividing the absent leader’s responsibilities among the team. Redistribution may appear efficient, but it often places senior-level decisions on people without the authority, capacity, or context to make them.
Coverage fills assignments. Interim leadership protects the function.
A Structured Entry, Steady Leadership, and Clear Handoff
Every engagement is tailored to the transition, but the work generally moves through three stages.
1. Stabilize and Align
I quickly assess the business priorities, team capacity, active work, decision rights, stakeholder expectations, and immediate risks. Together, we establish what I will own, what stays with the team, and how decisions and communication will flow.
2. Lead and Maintain Momentum
I provide hands-on marketing leadership within the agreed scope. That may include setting priorities, leading the team, guiding execution, managing partners, supporting executive decisions, monitoring performance, and addressing risks before they become expensive surprises.
3. Prepare the Handoff or Return
As the engagement concludes, I organize the context the next leader will need: current priorities, key decisions, open risks, team considerations, stakeholder commitments, and recommended next steps. The goal is a deliberate transition, not an abrupt transfer of a very large digital folder.
The Continuity Method™ informs how I assess risk, establish ownership, protect team capacity, and plan the transition forward.
Experienced Enough to Step In Without a Long Runway

Do Not Leave the Marketing Function Unowned
Whether you are preparing for a planned leave or responding to an unexpected leadership gap, the first step is understanding what must be protected, who needs support, and where experienced ownership is missing.
